Simpson grapplers compete in Storm Lake

STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Simpson College wrestling team had six wrestlers earn top-3 finishes at the Buena Vista Open on Saturday.

Chris Martinez (141), Jakob Slavin (165) and Shyler Langley (174) combined for seven wins and each placed second in their brackets. Martinez and Slavin both used a decision and a major decision to reach the finals, while Langley posted a decision, a pin and a major decision.

Shane Mathias took third at 184 with three wins highlighted by a pin and a 12-1 major decision. Andrew Wolff (197) and Colton Kinnison (285) also finished third as Wolff pinned his opponent in the consolation semifinals and defeated teammate Noah Kirtley in the placing match and Kinnison rebounded from an opening loss to win three-straight capped off by a 3-1 overtime victory.

Carter Logue (125), Joe Weaver (133), Sam McCoy (149) and Kirtley (174) placed fourth and Dylan McChesney (125) and Josh Bower (149) finished in sixth.
