Men's soccer defeats Macalester off free kick

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Connor Skultety (Sr., Lincoln, Neb.) kicked the game-winning goal off a set piece from the top of the box in the 87th minute, pushing the Storm past Macalester, 1-0 Sunday at Buxton Stadium.

Simpson (3-3-2, 0-1 IIAC) defeated Macalester for only the second time in the history of the series and for the first time since a 5-4 OT win in 2000. Simpson is now 2-4-1 all-time against the Scots.

Macalester (5-4-1, 2-0 MIAC) controlled most of the first half, limiting the Storm to only one shot.

"We were against the wind in the first half so we had a little trouble just getting out, and in the second half I think that assisted us to move forward," head coach Mike Wilson said. "We did well with our defensive shape but we could have done better getting in and attacking."

Simpson strengthened the attack in the second period, spending quality time in the Macalester third while outshooting the Scots in the frame, 7-6.

Goalkeeper Josh Youngman (Sr., Pella, Iowa) made five saves off Macalester's 11 attempts, grabbing four in the second half.

"Macalester is a great opponent," Wilson said. "This is a great win for us to get back on track after losing a tough match at Wartburg yesterday."

Simpson returns to Buxton Stadium Oct. 3 for a conference match against Buena Vista at 3 p.m.
