Football picked third in preseason poll

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Simpson College football team landed the third spot in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll, as announced by the conference Friday.

The Storm, which went 7-3 under first-year head coach Jim Glogowski a year ago, earned 58 points in the poll, including one first place vote. The Storm received six fewer points than Central, which picked up three first place votes. Buena Vista, picked fourth, tallied 48 points.

The coaches predicted defending-champion Wartburg to come out on top again in 2009, as the Kights tallied five first place votes and 69 points overall.

Simpson returns 13 starters and 33 letterwinners from a year ago, including senior offensive lineman Bill Carroll (Littleton, Colo.), a 2008 First Team All-IIAC pick and Consensus Draft Services (CDS) Preseason First Team Offense selection.

The Storm begins the 2009 season Sept. 5 at Menomone, Wis. against UW-Stout before opening the home slate against Northwestern (Minn.) Sept. 12. Simpson begins conference play Sept. 19 when it travels to Dubuque to face Loras.

The Storm hosts Graceland in a preseason scrimmage Aug. 28 at 5 p.m.
