Coe defeats Simpson, 48-14

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A slow start proved too much to overcome for the Simpson football team Saturday afternoon, as Coe handed the Storm a 48-14 defeat at Clarke Field.

On the strength of 431 offensive yards, Coe (6-1, 4-1 IIAC) built a 41-0 lead in the first half. Quarterback Brad Boyle, who sat out the second half, threw for 306 yards on 14-of-22 passing for two touchdowns in leading the Kohawks to a third-straight victory. Coe accumulated 585 yards on the day.

Coe scored touchdowns on 6-of-8 first-half possessions, while Simpson (2-6, 1-5 IIAC) picked up only two first downs. Three first-half drives ended in punts, two on interceptions and twice the Storm turned the ball over on downs.

Boyle accounted for the first four scores for Coe. He found the end zone on 3 and 1-yard runs and tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Chris Voss (4 yards) and a 62-yarder to Tyler Takes. Following an interception, Michael Rozum hooked up with Jared Kuehner on an 18-yard halfback pass to make the score 34-0 before Matt Myers plunged in from 1-yard out to close the first-half scoring.

After taking only one snap last week in Simpson's 36-33 loss to Dubuque, quarterback Tyson Unkrich (Sr., Swedesburg, Iowa) got the nod against Coe, splitting time with Chris Garza (So., Waukee, Iowa). Unkrich led the Storm's first scoring drive, which culminated with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Rogers (Fr., WR, South Sioux City, Neb.) just over four minutes into the fourth quarter.

Rogers led Simpson with three catches for 41 yards while making a touchdown catch in his seventh consecutive game.

Unkrich added a 54-yard scramble for a touchdown with 2:16 remaining in the game, capping off a 6-play, 99-yard scoring drive. He ended the day with a game-high 111 yards rushing, going 5-of-17 through the air for 47 yards and a touchdown. Garza went 4-of-9 for 36 yards and threw two interceptions.

Ty Larsen (So., DL, Des Moines, Iowa) forced a fumble by Matt Barnd at the Storm 4-yard line, which Ted Haag (Fr., LB, Waukee, Iowa) recovered at the 1 to spark Simpson's second touchdown drive.

Takes made five receptions for 124 yards, as eight different Kohawk receivers made catches. Boyle's 51 yards rushing paced the Coe ground game, followed by Patrick Wallace (46 yards on 6 attempts) and Sam Hammes (43 yards on 14 attempts). Tate Harrison and Calvin Thomas each made 10 tackles and one tackle-for-loss. Harrison registered a quarterback-hurry and Thomas broke up a pass. Seth Johnson and Austin Lloyed each intercepted passes for the Kohawks.

Cody Jensen (Sr., LB, Grinnell, Iowa) made 11 tackles and three tackles-for-loss. Chad Onstot (So., LB, Ackworth, Iowa) matched Jensen with 11 tackles while making one tackle-for-loss.

Simpson will look to snap a four-game losing streak next week when it hosts Cornell on Senior Recognition Night in the final home game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Oct. 31. All of the action can be followed by tuning in to Iowa's True Oldies Channel, 105.3 KEDB FM and www.kedb.fm.
