Bio

Austin Byrnes began his role as assistant director of communications at Simpson College in August 2024. 

Since joining the Storm staff, Byrnes has played an instrumental role in elevating Simpson’s livestream production, helping implement multi-camera setups, improved graphics, and enhanced coordination with on-air commentators. He has also been heavily involved in training and mentoring work study students, bringing valuable experience and structure as the department continues to expand its staff and coverage across multiple sports.

Byrnes came to Simpson with nearly a decade of experience in collegiate athletics communications. He served as assistant athletic director of communications at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey, Wash. from 2017-22, where he oversaw communications for 15 sports. His coverage included men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, cross country, track and field, golf, basketball, baseball, and softball. He began his career at Carroll College in Helena, Mont. from 2013-16 and worked for College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho from 2016-17.

Originally from Olympia, Wash., Byrnes relocated to Des Moines with his wife in the summer of 2023. He is a 2016 graduate of Carroll College, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in sports management.
