Easily one of the top distance runners in school history, Matt Chance ‘97 represented the Storm at four different national meets during his accomplished running career. A specialist in the 5,000 meters, Chance still owns the second-fastest time in school history outdoors, running 14:37.82 in 1996. In the 20 years since, nobody in a Simpson uniform has run faster. Chance was untouchable in the Iowa Conference outdoor 5,000 meters, as he swept the title from 1994-97. He was a two-time All-American outdoors and one-time indoors, placing second outdoors in 1996 and eighth in 1995. He is Simpson’s only multi-time All-American distance runner.
Chance graduated from Simpson in 1997 with degrees in Physical Education and Health before earning a master’s in Education from Lindenwood University in 2002.
