Waldorf pulls away from Simpson in third quarter

FOREST CITY, Iowa – The Simpson College football team dropped its first game of the 2022 season at Waldorf. The Storm trailed by one score at the break, but the Warriors pulled away in the third and never looked back en route to a 54-21 win.

The Warriors (3-0) blew the game open in the third quarter, stretching a 20-14 halftime lead into a 30-point advantage with the help of three touchdowns in the final 6:47 of the quarter. Waldorf scored twice on a pair of blocked punts and added a 78-yard score through the air during that span.

Simpson (0-1) capitalized on back-to-back turnovers in the second quarter to take a brief lead at 14-13 with 2:31 left in the half. Desmond Alexander hauled in the first score in the back of the endzone following an interception by Wyatt Schaben, and after a fumble recovery on Waldorf's next possession, J Jensen III found Reed Worth down the field for an 80-yard score.

Worth and Jensen connected for a second touchdown early in the fourth quarter as part of a 9-play, 75-yard drive that set the game at 44-21. The drive was highlighted by a 30-yard gain by freshman Aubrey Gillard, who led the team with 50 yards on seven carries throughout the game.

Jensen completed 13-of-22 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns, while starter Brett Bobinet had seven completions for 85 yards. Worth totaled 147 receiving yards and 26 yards rushing yards, Cameron Jones caught five passes for 55 yards, and Gavin O'Steen had two catches for 19 yards while also returning four kicks for 142 yards.

Schaben recorded eight tackles and Laronte Lewis and Mason Little registered six stops apiece to lead the defense.
