Schmitt provides offense at Westminster

FULTON, Mo. -- After more than a week away from competition, the Simpson baseball team return to the diamond at Westminster on Saturday, but dropped the doubleheader.

The Storm (1-3) lost 15-7 in the opener and 6-2 to close out the first day of back-to-back twin bills against the Bluejays (5-5).

Truman Schmitt exploded for four hits and five runs batted in for the day, including two home runs in the first contest. Kolton Arnold and Brandon Urias added three hits apiece to help the offense.

Game One
Westminster 15, Simpson 7
Simpson looked poised to grab the victory on Saturday after charging out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings. Schmitt opened the scoring in the first with a sacrifice fly, while Arnold and Urias later scored in the inning. In the second, Schmitt added to the lead with a three-run blast.

Westminster chipped away at the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the second to make it a 6-2 contest. After a scoreless third inning for both teams and a blank top of the fourth for the Storm, the Blue Jays erupted for eight runs in the bottom half to take the advantage.

Schmitt ripped his second homer of the day in the fifth to put the game at 10-7 in favor of the hosts. Both teams went scoreless in their next at bats, before Westminster tacked on five runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.

Brady Held and Schmitt ended with two hits, while Schmitt ended with five RBIs. Brett Kaulzarich was handed the loss after tossing 3.1 innings with eight runs allowed.

Game Two
Westminster 6, Simpson 2
The momentum carried into game two for the Blue Jays as they pushed three runs across in the second and three in the third to grab an early 6-0 tilt.

The scoring finally occurred for Simpson in the fifth frame as Noah Sacco and Held belted home runs. Simpson tried for late rallys in the sixth and seventh innings by putting two runners on each stanza, but were both stranded.

Brady Leonard finally allowed a hit this season, which came in the second inning. Leonard tossed all six innings for Simpson en route to his first loss this year.
