Bio

Simpson College marked a return to its roots when it hired Matt Jeter as head coach on April 1, 2016. A Simpson alum who helped the Storm to two Iowa Conference championships as a player, Jeter brings a renewed sense of focus the program as it makes a push back to the top of the league.

The 33rd head coach in program history, Jeter enjoyed a successful run as an assistant coach before taking over the Storm. Jeter was at NCAA Division II Central Missouri from 2010-15, starting out as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach before taking over as the defensive coordinator from 2011-15. 

"I couldn't be more excited to accept the position of head football coach at Simpson College," Jeter said. "As a former player and team captain at Simpson, my life was transformed in every way – academically, athletically and socially. I feel well-prepared for this new position and the challenges and opportunities that are ahead. My vision is to align our program with Brian Niemuth's plan for the entire department, to place the well-being of our student-athletes as the focal point, to remain in full compliance with all NCAA standards and to expect comprehensive excellence in all we do."

At Simpson

• Entering seventh season as head coach in 2022
• Named American Rivers Conference Coach of the Year in 2018 
• Ranked third in the conference in total offense and total defense in 2018
• After leading the Storm to a two-game turnaround in 2017, the Storm added another two-game improvement in 2018
• Defense generated 24 takeaways in 2018, surpassing the previous 12-season high of 19 in 2017
• Had the best scoring defense in the conference in 2018
• 33rd head coach in program history

Before Simpson

• Helped Central Missouri to a 47-22 mark in six seasons, including three postseason appearances
• Mules won a school-record 11 games in 2010, advancing to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs
• UCM won eight games in 2011, 2014 and 2015 and won the Texarkana Bowl in 2014
• UCM defense led the MIAA with 30 turnovers in 2014
• Defenses allowed less than 23 ppg in five seasons as coordinator
• 16 defensive players earned All-MIAA honors 
• Helped Drake to the Pioneer Football League title in 2004
• Drake defense ranked fourth in the nation with 31 forced turnovers in 2007

Playing Career

• Two-year starter at cornerback for the Storm in 1996-97
• Helped Simpson to a record of 22-2, two IIAC Championship and two trips to the NCAA Division III Playoffs
• Served as team captain on 1997 team that set a school record for wins in a season and made an appearance in the national semifinals
• Also earned two letters as a member of the track and field team
• Earned First Team All-Region honors at Iowa Central CC in 1995
