Storm battle in overtime loss against No. 10 Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa - Amber Johnson scored the first goal of the game but Simpson couldn't hang on in a 2-1, overtime loss to No. 10 Wartburg on Saturday.

Kelli Anderson's golden goal 40 seconds into the first overtime helped the Knights (10-1-1, 3-0 Iowa Conference) remain undefeated in league play.

"I felt that we started the game today very confident," head coach Ryan Sander said. "Goal scoring opportunities were limited for us today but we scored early against a very good Wartburg team."

Johnson's sixth goal of the season came in the 11th minute, taking an assist from Nicole Dillenburg.

Simpson held the lead until the 32nd minute when Katy Wendt converted a penalty kick to tie the game.

Megan Petersen made a career-high 15 saves in goal for the Storm (8-4-2, 2-2). Wartburg attempted 29 shots putting 17 on goal, but the Simpson defense held Wartburg for most of the match.

"We defended as well as we have all year," Sander said. "Obviously, we are dissapointed in the result, but we can take a lot of good things from the game and build upon them."

Simpson attempted only two shots on the day, but hung with one of the best teams in the nation.

Simpson hosts Buena Vista on Wednesday, Oct. 12 in a 3 p.m. kickoff from Buxton Stadium.
