No. 18 Storm battle No. 10 Wartburg in top-20 showdown
INDIANOLA, Iowa – The No. 18-ranked Simpson College women's wrestling team went toe-to-toe with No. 10 Wartburg in a top-20 American Rivers Conference showdown on Wednesday night, coming away with four match victories in a 29-17 loss.
Layla Phillips delivered one of Simpson's biggest highlights, edging No. 8 Jasmine Luedtke in a thrilling 8-7 decision at 117 pounds. The sophomore led 4-1 after the first period and scored the final two points of the match late after Luedtke had rallied to go front 7-6.
At 124 pounds, No. 7 Ashley Cannon kept momentum on Simpson's side, recording a fall over Gable Hemann in 2:58. No. 9 Annelise Obermark added another big win at 145 pounds, pinning Alex Harswick in 1:17 to pull Simpson (0-1, 0-1 A-R-C) within five, 19-14.
No. 9 Keeley Kehrli closed out the Storm's scoring with an 8-4 decision over May Prado at 160 pounds.
Wartburg (1-0, 1-0 A-R-C) claimed six victories on the night, including a pair by fall and one by technical fall.
