Hawtrey leads Storm against Graceland

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Madison Hawtrey had nine kills but it wasn't enough as the Simpson volleyball team lost to Graceland 3-0 in the home finale Tuesday at Cowles Fieldhouse.

Graceland won by set scores of 25-19, 25-21, 28-26.

Hawtrey hit .296 with nine digs for the Storm (8-17). Hannah Lester and Megan LeMay added six kills apiece and Lester hit a team-high .312 on 16 attempts. Alyssa Mathews handed out 29 assists and Ariana Martinez had 15 digs.

Simpson threatened to extend the match in set three, taking a 24-21 lead on a kill by Hawtrey. Graceland came back with four-straight points, but LeMay and Lexie Parks combined for a block to tie it up 25-25. A Yellowjacket error gave Simpson match-point at 26-25, but Graceland responded with three straight to close the match.

Emma Runyan had 15 kills to lead the Yellowjackets (15-19).

Simpson closes the season at the Augustana Pumpkin Bash on Friday, Oct. 26 in Rock Island, Ill. The Storm will face Augustana (Ill.) and Illinois Tech.
