Tennis courts resurfaced thanks to USTA grant
INDIANOLA, Iowa – Simpson College Athletics unveiled newly resurfaced tennis courts this fall, providing an enhanced home facility for both the men's and women's programs.
The project was made possible in part by a $47,000 grant from the United States Tennis Association (USTA), with support coming from USTA National ($44,000), USTA Missouri Valley ($2,500), and USTA Iowa District ($500). Director of Tennis Nicole Berger applied for the grant, which was awarded to strengthen Simpson's facilities and support the continued growth of the sport.
"This project represents a significant investment in our student-athletes," said director of athletics Marty Bell. "We are grateful to USTA for their partnership and to Nicole for her work in securing this grant. The finished product gives our programs a true home-court advantage and elevates the experience for everyone involved in Simpson Tennis."
Simpson's resurfaced facility aligns with USTA's nationwide push to expand the sport. Earlier this year, USTA announced that 24.7 million Americans played tennis in 2024, a new record. To support this momentum, the organization pledged $10 million in facility improvements across the country, including grants for new construction, refurbishments, and lighting projects.
As part of Simpson's grant commitment, the program will also play an expanded role in growing the game locally. Courts 4-6 now feature age-appropriate lines designed for players ages 5-11, making it easier for children to learn tennis with the right equipment and court size. Beginning next summer, Simpson will partner with Indianola Parks and Recreation to offer additional youth clinics and lessons.
"The USTA's support benefits not only our student-athletes, but also the greater Indianola community," said Berger. "We are thrilled to provide a facility that inspires both competitive play at the collegiate level and new opportunities for young players to fall in love with the sport."
