Goals by Stump, Thomas help Storm beat Nebraska Wesleyan

LINCOLN, Neb. — Mackenzie Stump and Maddie Thomas scored goals, the defense allowed just three shots on goal and the Simpson women's soccer team beat Nebraska Wesleyan 2-1 for its first conference win of the season Wednesday.

Stump's first goal of the season put Simpson on the board in the 11th minute and Thomas added an insurance tally in the 64th as the Storm (2-10-3, 1-5 Iowa Conference) snapped an eight-game winless streak.

"Tonight had everything to do with heart," head coach Jill Serafino said. "We challenged every ball and it made the difference. Every player contributed tonight and owned their roles."

After failing to score a goal in the previous three games, Simpson scored three times in the past two games. Zoe Seiler made two saves, shutting out Nebraska Wesleyan for the first 73 minutes.

Hallie Schimenti scored the lone goal for the Prairie Wolves (6-9-1, 2-4-1).

"We stepped up to the next level that we were capable of reaching but faced mental obstacles," Serafino said. "Tonight we broke through that barrier and proved a lot to ourselves. I'm proud of the team."
