INDIANOLA, Iowa - Riley Adams earned a shutout in her first career start at goalkeeper as the Simpson women's soccer team opened the 2016 season with a 0-0 draw with Grinnell on Thursday night.
A junior, Adams made seven saves for the Storm (0-0-1), including two crucial stops in the second overtime. After getting outshot 16-7 in regulation, Simpson picked up the attack in extra time, taking six shots to Grinnell's two.
After failing to get a good look during regulation, Simpson had several near-misses in overtime. Mackenzie Stump, Maddie Thomas, Meredith Harrison and Casey Reisen all had dangerous opportunities as the Storm tried to repay their overtime loss to Grinnell a year ago.
Stump and Harrison each took three shots for Simpson and Polly Carr made five saves for the Pioneers (0-0-1).
Up next: Simpson heads to Rockford, Ill. for the weekend where the Storm will face Concordia Chicago on Saturday and Judson on Sunday. Saturday's start time is set for 2 p.m. while Sunday's game kicks off at Noon.
