Storm fall to Wabash, Briar Cliff on opening day

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Simpson baseball team dropped both of its games on opening day at the Tucson Invitational Games, falling to Wabash 6-5 in the opener before losing to Briar Cliff 13-0 in seven innings in the nightcap.

Wabash 6, Simpson 5
The Storm took a 3-0 lead in the third but Wabash scored six unanswered runs for a 6-3 lead after seven innings. Scott Meier drove in a run on a single and Jared Herzog earned a bases-loaded walk to pull within one in the eighth, but Simpson went down in order in the ninth.

Tanner Jansen gave up six hits and five runs -- three earned -- in six innings on the hill, striking out four. He also roped a triple as part of a 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Meier also went 2-for-4 and Herzog had a team-high two RBIs.

Briar Cliff 13, Simpson 0 (7 innings)
Simpson's offense couldn't sting enough hits together to produce a run against the Chargers. Trey Kehoe and Hunter Hillygus had two apiece, accounting for four of the Storm's five hits against the Briar Cliff staff.

The Chargers dented the plate in each of the first three innings for a 9-0 lead. Storm relievers Tom Kunzer and Michael Sunga kept Briar Cliff off the board until the seventh, when the Chargers tacked on four for the run rule.

Curt Castenson gave up nine runs -- six earned -- in 2 1/3 innings in the start. Freshman left-hander Kunzer struck out four and gave up four hits and three runs -- two earned -- in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
