Bio

The 2019 season marks Heath Moenck's ninth as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach, and expectations are high for the future as the Storm try to make a name for themselves in the Iowa Conference and the region.

Moenck has sent runners to the national meet three times throughout his tenure. Ryan Edwardson qualified in 2011, Joe Farrand qualified in 2012 and Ian McKenzie made the cut in 2017. McKenzie's effort marked the best by a Simpson runner at the National Championships since 1995.

In 2017, Moenck led the men’s team to a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Central Region Championships, the program’s best showing in 17 years. In 2014, the women's team was one of the most improved in the region, moving up seven places from the previous year to take 19th.

As a middle distance and distance coach for the track and field teams, Moenck has seen 26 of his athletes earn all-conference honors, including four conference champions and two relay teams. Most notably, Farrand earned Most Valuable Track Performer honors at the 2013 Iowa Conference Indoor Championships after winning the 3,000 and 5,000 meters.

Moenck came to Simpson from NCAA Division III University of St. Thomas, where he was an assistant cross country and track and field coach. In charge of the middle distance and distance runners, Moenck helped the Tommies win Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) championships in women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.

Prior to St. Thomas, Moenck spent two seasons at NCAA Division II Augustana College, where he started as a graduate assistant before being promoted to assistant cross country and track and field coach in 2010. While at Augustana, the Vikings won consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) championships in women’s cross country and turned in two, top-15 finishes at the national meet (fifth in 2008 and 13th in 2009). The men’s team won a conference title in 2009 and placed 10th in the nation.

As a student-athlete, Moenck lettered for the cross country and track and field teams at the University of Iowa, where he was primarily a distance runner. He served as team captain of the cross country squad as a senior in 2007.

Moenck and his wife, Mickey, reside in Indianola with their daughter, Eden. Mickey is an assistant softball coach for the Storm.
