Hawtrey solid as Storm fall to Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Madison Hawtrey hit .259 with a team-high nine kills but it wasn't enough as the Simpson volleyball team lost to Coe 3-0 on Saturday at Kohawk Arena. Coe won by set scores of 25-18, 25-12, 25-14.

Simpson is now 6-13 overall and 1-3 in the American Rivers Conference. Coe is 15-5 and 3-1 in the league.

Hannah Lester added five kills and Alyssa Mathews handed out 13 assists to go along with a team-high 11 digs in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set — Coe jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before Simpson battled back. The two teams went back-and-forth until Ty Duve's kill pulled Simpson even at 16-16. But back-to-back kills by Adysen Witnermote and Elli Teeple put Coe ahead for good, 18-16, and Simpson couldn't recover.

Second Set — Hawtrey buried a kill to make it 3-3 early in the set, but the Kohawks rattled off six straight points to take a 9-3 advantage. Another run late in the set helped Coe seal the win.

Third Set — After trailing by four early in the set, Simpson came back to pull within 15-13 on a kill by Lester. Darby Hawtrey responded with a kill for Coe, though, sparking an 8-0 run that proved to be the difference in the final set.
