Luth named all-tournament team, volleyball goes 2-2 at Augustana to close season

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Simpson volleyball team closed the 2016 season last weekend at the Augustana Pumpkin Bash, going 2-2 with wins over Iowa Wesleyan and Rockford and losses to Augustana and Webster.

On Friday, the Storm (11-16) beat Iowa Wesleyan in three sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-23) before falling to the host Vikings in three (25-13, 25-19, 25-20). Simpson started Saturday with a three-set win over Rockford (25-12, 25-19, 25-13) before losing a four-set contest to Webster (17-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-20).

Jacqueline Luthearned a spot on the All-Tournament team, closing out a memorable junior campaign with a team-high 46 kills and a .288 attack percentage over the weekend. She finished the season with an Iowa Conference-leading 3.75 kills per set, setting school records for kills per set and attacks per set (10.90) since the 25-point format was adopted in 2008. She had 341 kills on the season and moved past 800 for her career, heading into her senior season with 829 kills.

SIMPSON 3, IOWA WESLEYAN 0
Luth led the charge with 11 kills as the Storm topped Iowa Wesleyan for the second time this season. Niki Dean added six kills and five total blocks, including four solo. Meredith Cunningham had a team-high 19 assists and Madison Hawtrey paced the back row with 39 digs.

AUGUSTANA 3, SIMPSON 0
Hannah Lester tallied a team-high nine kills in the three-set loss to Augustana, which went 3-1 on the weekend and closed the regular season with 25 wins. Alyssa Mathews led the way with 16 assists and Kayla Aronow had a team-best 15 digs.

SIMPSON 3, ROCKFORD 0
Luth led the way with 12 kills and just two errors as the Storm had little problem with the one-win Regents. Dean added eight kills, Mathews had 18 assists and Hawtrey had 13 digs.

WEBSTER 3, SIMPSON 1
Luth finished the season with a 17-kill performance as Simpson raced out to a one-set lead against the Gorlocks. But the combination of Macee Owen and Jory Siebenmorgen -- who accounted for 12 kills apiece -- proved to be too much as Webster won the final three sets. Mathews and Cunningham had identical double-doubles with 14 assists and 10 digs apiece. Hawtrey had 13 digs.
