Volleyball hangs tough in pair of five-set losses

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Simpson volleyball team played well in a pair of five-set losses on the first day of the Trinity University Invitational, falling in five sets to host Trinity and 18th-ranked La Verne.

The Storm (12-19) were up 2-1 in each match before losing to quality opponents. Simpson lost to Trinity 20-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-12, 15-18 before falling to nationally-ranked La Verne 25-12, 20-25, 25-27, 25-11, 15-9.

Trinity 3, Simpson 2
Tabitha Blaser, Niki Dean and MacKenzie McGraw all tallied double-figure kills, led by Blaser's 15. Dean had 13 kills and six blocks and McGraw had 11 and four blocks. Olivia Sulentic finished with 31 digs and Sara Hoppenworth handed out 39 assists.

La Verne 3, Simpson 2
McGraw had 13 kills to lead the Storm, who won sets two and three before the Leopards foiled the upset bid by prevailing in the final two sets. Hoppenworth had 35 assists and Elisa Wildy had three service aces. Destinee Sales had 14 kills and hit .444 to lead La Verne.
