Storm split on opening night

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - The Simpson volleyball team beat Iowa Wesleyan 3-0 before falling to Mt. Mercy 3-0 in  the first contests of the season Wednesday night.

The Storm (1-1) beat the Tigers 25-20, 25-17, 25-23 in the first match of the night. The second match waas a 20-15, 20-19, 20-16 loss to the Mustangs.

Tabitha Blaser led Simpson against Iowa Wesleyan, leading the team with nine kills while hitting .346. Jacqueline Luth and MacKenzie McGraw had eight kills apiece, while Luth and Olivia Sulentic had 11 digs each. Maura Chadwick and Sara Hoppenworth split setting duties, finishing with 14 and 13 assists, respectively.

Luth led the team against a battle-tested Mt. Mercy club with five kills. Chadwick handed out 12 assists and Sulentic finished with 13 digs. The Mustangs came into the night with five games under their belts and closed at 6-2.

The Storm travel to the Minnesota-Morris Invitational in Morris, Minn. this weekend. Simpson faces Bethany Lutheran and Morris on Friday and Hamline and St. Catherine on Saturday.
