Volleyball splits at Elmhurst Invitational

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Simpson volleyball team split four matches at the Elmhurst Invitational over the weekend, winning a pair of five-set grinders and falling to a nationally ranked foe.

On Friday, the Storm (10-12 overall) beat Bethany (W.V.) in five sets before falling to St. Mary's (Ind.) in four. Simpson started play Saturday with a 3-2 win over St. Olaf before suffering a three-set loss to No. 8 Washington-St. Louis.

Elisa Wildy led the team with 46 kills on the weekend. Tabitha Blaser added 41 kills and Jacqueline Luth had 39 with a .316 hitting percentage. MacKenzie McGraw finished with 12 blocks, Katie Kieffer averaged 8.88 assists per set and hit .490, and Olivia Sulentic led the way with 70 digs.

Simpson 3, Bethany 2 (25-19, 16-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12)

Wildy had a season-high 16 kills to lead four Simpson players in double figures. Luth had 12, Blaser had 10 and MacKenzie McGraw finished with 15 and a team-best .480 hitting percentage. Kieffer posted 51 assists.

St. Mary's 3, Simpson 1 (25-17, 25-21, 17-25, 25-19

Simpson's offense slowed down in Friday's second contest, as the Storm hit .168 and didn't have a player reach double figures.

Luth led the way with nine kills and four players chipped in with six each. Kieffer tallied 29 assists and Sulentic and Kayla Aronow had two aces apiece.

Simpson 3, St. Olaf 2 (25-23, 28-30, 17-25, 25-23, 15-12)

Luth hit .370 with 15 kills, Wildy posted a 15-kill, 13-dig double-double and Blaser buried a match-high 17 kills to lead the Storm to a comeback win.

Simpson lost a four-point lead in the fifth set, but took a 13-12 lead on a bad set by St. Olaf. Kills by Luth and Blaser closed out the win.

No. 8 Washington-St. Louis 3, Simpson 0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-15)

Wildy and Blaser had nine kills apiece, but Simpson didn't have an answer for the well-balanced Wash U attack.

Caroline Dupont hit .688 with 11 kills to lead the Bears, who hit .394 as a team and improved to 23-4 on the season.
