Storm's fast start not enough against Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Simpson volleyball team got out to a fast start in set one but couldn't sustain that momentum in a 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-16) loss to Coe on Wednesday night at Eby Fieldhouse.

Haley Danforth and Steph Keller had 10 kills each for the Storm (1-5, 0-2 Iowa Conference), who opened a 22-16 lead in the first set before faltering downs the stretch. Danforth hit a team-high .421 and Ashley Padget had 30 assists.

Rachel Schaefer's 11 kills paced the Kohawks (8-1, 1-0). Molly Steffens added 10 and a .281 hitting percentage and Emily Ryan had 33 assists.

Simpson amassed 16 kills and a .256 hitting percentage in the first set but combined for only 18 kills the rest of the way. The Storm were held to .081 hitting in the second set and .054 in the third.

On the game, Coe out-hit Simpson .253-.133.

Simpson returns to action this weekend at the St. Benedict Invitational in St. Cloud, Minn. The Storm begin play at 5 p.m. on Firday, Sept. 16 when they face Minnesota-Morris.
