Central snaps losing streak to Storm

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Caitlin Kouba and Kiley Meyers led a balanced attack with nine kills apiece and Central remained undefeated with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-21) win against Simpson on Wednesday night.

Cowles Fieldhouse was packed for the Iowa Conference opener, but the Dutch (5-0) stole the show. Central hit .278 with 11 errors while Simpson hit -.018 and committed 27 attack errors.

"We have to be consistent," 13th-year head coach Lana Smith said. "We had way too many unforced errors and were handing over points."

For Central, the win snaps a five-match losing streak against Simpson dating back to 2008.

Kouba led the team with a .350 hitting percentage, teaming up with setter Maggie Snyder who handed out 27 assists. Jessica Laflin added six kills and Chelsea Grieger had 19 digs.

The Storm (1-4) sent 13 players to the floor and numerous lineups, still waiting for a few players to claim a regular spot in the rotation.

"We are taking turns on who's hot and who can get the job done," Smith said. "It seems to change every night, but there are definitely a couple of positions that need filled."

Megan Dunlavy led the team with eight kills in 34 attempts. Steph Keller had six kills and Ashley Padget distributed 12 assists. Caitlyn Shiek's seven digs were tops on the team.

A bright spot for Simpson was its service, coming away with nine aces on the night. Dunlavy accounted for five.

The Storm get the weekend off and take the court next on Wednesday, Sept. 14 against Coe in Cedar Rapids. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. from Eby Fieldhouse.
