Friesth earns IIAC weekly honors

INDIANOLA, Iowa – A pair of Simpson student-athletes earned Iowa Conference Performer of the Week honors in their respective sports, as volleyball player Brittany Friesth and women's soccer player Megan Petersen each took home the weekly award, the conference announced Tuesday.

Friesth, a senior libero, averaged 5.29 digs per set as the Storm went 2-3 during the week. A graduate of Adel-DeSoto-Minburn and native of Adel, Iowa, Friesth totaled 111 digs during the week. Friesth registered double-digit digs in each match, surpassing 30 in a five-set win at Wartburg (32) and a four-set loss to Carthage (34).

Peterson, a freshman goalkeeper and native of Indianola, Iowa, grabbed 14 saves in Saturday's double-overtime loss to Loras, making a number of difficult saves. The 14 saves is the most for a Simpson goalkeeper in a single game since 2006 and ties for the second-most amount of saves in a game in program history. Petersen was three saves off the school record of 17.

Other Outstanding Weekly Performers

The IIAC also recognized the following outstanding athletic performance from the past week.

Football – Junior running back Jake Rissi (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) ran for 131 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown in Simpson's 17-16 win over Cornell. Normally a tight end and fullback, Rissi filled in at tailback due to injuries and became the third Simpson back this season to rush for over 100 yards in a game. Trailing 16-10 early in the third quarter, he broke off a 73-yard touchdown run for the game-winning score. The run tied for the third-longest in school history and is the longest run from scrimmage in the Iowa Conference this season.
