Storm continues to roll, sets up re-match
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Oct. 20, 2009) – The Simpson women's volleyball team did its part Tuesday night, shutting out Coe 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-22) to set up a much anticipated matchup with Wartburg next week.
Currently second place in the IIAC, Simpson (17-10, 6-1 IIAC) travels to conference-frontrunner Wartburg Oct. 27 with a conference title at stake.
The Knights defeated the Storm 3-2 (26-28, 25-17, 25-16, 20-25, 15-13) at the Simpson Invitational Sept. 19.
Against Coe, Simpson hit .253 as a team while holding the host-Kohawks to .090.
Whitney Oviatt (Sr., MH, Cedarcrest, Wash.) had 10 kills and two block assists as the Storm won its seventh game in eight tries. Megan Dunlavy (So., MH, Bettendorf, Iowa), who was voted Iowa Conference Performer of the Week earlier in the day, had six kills in 13 attempts for a .462 hitting percentage.
Lara Gillespie (Sr. OH, Lake Park, Iowa) compiled a .421 hitting percentage off nine kills of 19 attacks with only one error. She also had 10 digs. Setter Tara Christensen (Sr., Hinton, Iowa) handed out 32 assists and libero Brittany Friesth (Sr., Adel, Iowa) came away with a game-high 15 digs.
Kaitlin McClimon charted a game-high 11 kills and a .240 hitting percentage for the Kohwaks, who dropped to 8-18 overall and 1-5 in the Iowa Conference. Emily Ryan had 26 assists and Brittany Shickell totaled 12 digs. Katy Heater chipped in with 10.
Before welcoming Simpson to Waverly, the Knights face Luther – Simpson's only conference loss on the season – Wednesday night in Decorah.
Simpson and Wartburg's match is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
