Oviatt, Friesth Sweep IIAC Weekly Volleyball Awards

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Simpson seniors Whitney Oviatt and Brittany Friesth swept Iowa Conference Volleyball Performer of the Week honors after the Storm posted a 3-2 record during the week, including wins over No. 17 Concordia-Moorhead and No. 6 St. Thomas en-route to a second-place finish at the IIAC-MIAC Border Battle in Dubuque.

Oviatt, a senior middle hitter from Carnations, Wash., took home the weekly award for hitters after she earned all-tournament honors at the Border Battle. Oviatt led the team with 60 kills while compiling a .261 attack percentage during the weekend in which the Storm went 3-1. Oviatt also led the team with 20 total blocks, for a 1.11 blocks per set average. She recorded her best match against No. 6 St. Thomas with 20 kills (20-5-43) and a match-high .349 attack percentage. On the week, Oviatt totaled 75 kills and a .234 attack percentage.

Friesth earned the weekly award as the top libero in the IIAC. The senior from Adel, Iowa headed the defensive effort for the Storm, leading the team with 89 digs at the Border Battle, averaging 4.94 digs per set. Friesth also posted 24 digs in a five-set loss at Luther Sept. 29.

Simpson returns to IIAC action Wednesday when it hosts rival-Central at Cowles Fieldhouse. The match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
