Galbraith's heptathlon among the best in Division III
Sarah Galbraith had a breakthrough performance in the heptathlon at the Kansas Relays to highlight the Simpson women's track and field team's performances last weekend.
Competing in the heptathlon for the first time in her career, Galbraith posted the No. 14 score in Division III and the best by a Simpson athlete since 1995. While Galbraith went to Lawrence for the Wednesday/Thursday multi-event, the rest of the team won two events and turned in nine, top-three finishes at the Central Open in Pella. No team scores were kept.
GALBRAITH COMES UP BIG IN HEPTATHLON
The defending Iowa Conference champion in the indoor pentathlon, Galbraith made big strides to take home the outdoor crown when she scored 4,243 points to place seventh at the Kansas Relays. The top non-Division I finisher, Galbraith set new personal-bests in four of seven events – the 200 meters, long jump, shot put and javelin throw. Her performance currently leads the Iowa Conference and ranks fourth in school history.
OWENS, DOHERTY, LOVAN TAKE HOME TITLES AT CENTRAL
Jaycie Owens won the 400-meter hurdles and the pole vaulting duo of Mary Doherty and Audrey LoVan tied for first to lead the Storm at the Central Open. Owens ran a season-best 1:12.16 in the 400 hurdles while Doherty and LoVan each cleared 9-feet, 1/4 inches on the pole vault.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES
Sadie Timms ran a personal best 2:22.90 in the 800 meters to place second overall, the top collegiate finisher in the event. Her effort ranks ninth in the IIAC … Briana McCloskey ran a season-best 11:26.47 to place second in the 3,000 meters, the only Simpson competitor in the field … Alex Niemier set a new personal-best in the shot put with a heave of 38-feet, 3 1/4 inches to place second. The mark sits at No. 10 in the IIAC … First-year discus thrower Annie Gullickson continues to make strides, improving her mark for the fourth-straight competition. She placed second with a toss of 124-feet, 11-inches, 10 feet further than her first attempt of the season in early April. Her effort ranks eighth in the IIAC … Alayna Geronzin set a new best in the hammer throw (114-feet, 11-inches) to place second.
