Track and field teams close productive weekend at Jim Duncan

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Simpson track and field teams turned in five, top-five performances to highlight the final day of the Jim Duncan Invitational on Saturday.

Facing a strong headwind, Simpson sprinters didn't run blazing times but fared well in the talented field nonetheless. Dylan Kalinay turned in the top individual effort, placing third in the 110-meter hurdles. The 4x100-meter relay also placed third, putting up the No. 2 time in the Iowa Conference in the process.

Kalinay ran the hurdles in 15.50 seconds, the top Division III finisher in the field. He ran in the third heat, which faced winds twice as strong as the second heat. Winner Jimmy Evers and second-place Jordan Fields ran in the second heat.

Prince Krah, Chase Wetterling, Kirk Wicks and Ryan Sarver ran the 4x100 relay in season-best 42.37 seconds. Wetterling, Wicks and Krah joined Matt Pearson to place sixth in the 4x400 relay, which finished in 3:21.39, currently the No. 3 time in the conference.

Men's Highlights

• Travis Tupper placed fifth in the 200 (22.49), the No. 6 time in the IIAC.
• Isaac Frazier came in fifth in the 110 hurdles (15.80)
• Emmitt Wheatley placed seventh in the 100 meters (11.38).
• Wetterling placed eighth in the 400 (49.60), the No. 4 time in the IIAC. Wicks finished eighth (49.86), the No. 8 time in the IIAC.
• Jordan Coughenour ran 56.59 in the 400 hurdles, placing 10th with the No. 4 time in the IIAC.

On the women's side, Alex Niemier had the top finish of the day, taking fifth in the shot put. She had a personal-best heave of 37-feet, 9 1/4-inches, the No. 9 effort in the conference.

Sarah Galbraith had a busy day highlighted by a sixth-place effort in the 400 meters. She finished the 400 in 60.67, took eighth in the 100 hurdles (17.08) and 10th in the 200 (27.48). She added a personal-best toss in the javelin throw, reaching 91-feet, 5-inches to place eighth.

Keeghan Corcoran added a seventh-place effort in the 400 (63.84).

Simpson will have a split squad this week. Multi-event athletes will go to the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan. while the rest of the team will go to the Dutch Open in Pella, Iowa on Saturday, April 23.
