Storm sweep 3k in first indoor action of 2016

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Simpson track and field teams won three events – including the women's and men's 3,000 meters – in its first indoor competition of 2016 on Saturday at the Cornell Invitational.

The men's team placed third of six teams with 64 points and the women took fourth of six, also with 64 points.

Storm runners took first and second in the men's 60 and 3,000. In the 60, Travis Tupper won in 7.18 and Davey Jergens came in second in 7.22. Ian McKenzie won the 3,000 in 9:06.19, followed by Nick Yaeger (9:16.46).

The Storm women dominated the 3,000, owning three of the top four spots. Sadie Timms broke away from the pack, crossing in 11:00.19 for the win. Breana Gaster came in third (11:09.05) and Briana McCloskey finished fourth (11:12.27).

In all, Simpson turned in 14 top-three finishes on the day.
