Storm win six events at Cornell Hilltop Invite

MT. VERNON, Iowa – The Simpson track and field teams won a combined six events at Cornell's Hilltop Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 31. The men placed second of five teams and the women placed third of five.

MEN'S RECAP

Brice Sheeder, Dylan Kalinay and Isaac Frazier won individual events and the distance medley relay team added another win for the Storm, who scored 142 points. Dubuque won the meet with 205 points.

Sheeder won the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 51.95 seconds. Kalinay bested the field in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.72 seconds as the Storm went 1-2 in the event with Frazier coming in second (8.79). Frazier cleared 6-feet, 8-inches to win the high jump and the quartet of Kyle Hovey, Tris Reed, Cody Alexander and Blake Willadsen won the distance medley relay (11:17.99).

Other notable efforts included:

  • Cody Alexander placed second in the 800 (2:06.08)
  • Sheeder, Tate Tufte, Brandt Seward and Trevor McKee placed second in the 4x400 relay (3:31.76)
  • Jackson Redmond placed second in the triple jump (38-9)
  • Miles Kirts (4:36.18) and Willadsen (4:36.61) went 3-4 in the Mile, respectively
  • Nick Yaeger placed third in the 3k (9:05.68)
  • Mitch Stoltzman placed third in the pole vault (12-9 1/2)
  • Davey Jergens, Tufte, McKee and Sheeder placed third in the 4x200 (1:34.76)
  • Koltin Pfaffle placed fourth in the shot put (42-9)

 

WOMEN'S RECAP

Jessica Lamb won the 800 meters and Bayley Fleshner broke the tape in the 60 hurdles to lead the Storm to a third-place finish. Simpson scored 98 points, trailing team champion Dubuque (131) and second-place Mount Mercy (113).

Lamb helped Simpson go 1-2 in the 800, running a 2:34.67 to edge teammate Jessica Gronke (2:35.16). Fleshner lowered her season-best time in the 60 hurdles, crossing the finish line in 9.44 seconds.

Simpson also got a second-place effort from Lauren Martin in the 60 meters. She took seventh in the prelims but cut a whole 0.1 seconds and moved up five places in the finals (8.31).

Other notable efforts included:

  • Courtney Neuendorf placed third in the Mile (5:35.12)
  • Mary Doherty placed third in the pole vault (7-10 1/2)
  • Fleshner (15-0) and Sarah Galbraith (14-10) went 3-4 in the long jump
  • Galbraith, Lamb, Elizabeth Burgus and Audrey Lovan placed third in the 4x400 (4:40.70)
  • Lovan, Keeghan Corcoran, Hannah Mason and Burgus placed third in the 4x200 (1:59.21)
  • Briana McCloskey placed fourth in the 3k (11:09.61)
  • Galbraith placed fifth in the high jump (4-6)
