Sigmund wins 400, Storm take 4th at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – April Sigmund won the 400-meter dash in leading the Simpson women's track and field team to a fourth-place finish of 10 teams at the Cornell Hilltop Invitational on Saturday.

The Storm finished with 62 points, just one behind host Cornell. Mount Mercy won the meet with 94 points, followed by St. Ambrose with 90.

Sigmund ran a 1:01.91 to win the 400, edging Sade Myers (William Penn) who finished in 1:02.06.

The senior was also pivotal on a pair of relay teams, leading off both the 4x200 and 4x400 while helping each to second place. Sigmund teamed with Bayley Fleshner, Sarah Ney and Jordan Maher in the 4x200 (1:49.93); in the 4x400 she was joined by Sammy Nelson, Jamie Elbert and Lindsey Borgomainerio (4:17.97).

Simpson also got second-place efforts from Jade Osborne in the 3,000 meters (11:35.40) and Fleshner in the 60-meter hurdles (9.39).

In her first collegiate track meet, senior Elbert took third in the 800 meters (2:25.57) while fourth-place finishes came from Maher in the 60 hurdles (9.82), Ney in the 200 meters (27.59) and Mary Doherty in the pole vault (2.45 meters).

Simpson travels to the Grinnell Open next Saturday, Feb. 9.
