Storm open season at Augsburg

Meet Report

AUGSBURG – With only three swimmers able to compete in the first event of the season, the Simpson women's swimming team placed fifth of five teams at the season-opening Augsburg Pentathlon on Saturday, Oct. 20.

St. Catherine won the event with 2,088.5 points. Macalester placed second (1,619), followed by Augsburg (725), Hamline (678.5) and Simpson (267).

"The pentathlon was a great way to kick off our season," interim head coach Eric Crawford said. "I got to see the team swim in events they normally wouldn't."

The Storm's top finish of the day came from freshman Marissa Stepleton, who placed 12th in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:21.99. She also took 23rd in the 100 butterfly (1:15.37) and 24th in the 100 IM (1:14.46).

Megan Lein finished only two placed behind Stepleton in the breaststroke, coming in 14th (1:22.33). She added a 21st-place showing in the 100 IM (1:13.80) and took 25th in the 100 butterfly (1:15.63).

Hannah Yarbrough, normally a distance swimmer, took 31st in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle.

"We are a bigger team this year but still small in comparison to other schools," Crawford said of the squad size. Seven swimmers made the trip on opening weekend. "The point total at this meet does not justify the type of team we are. What we lack in numbers, we make up for in speed. I am really proud of their performance."

Simpson is off until Nov. 16 when it opens Iowa Conference competition with a dual at Loras. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
