Trio of scorers power Storm past Spartans

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Powered by goals from three different players, the Simpson College women's soccer team took down Dubuque 3-1 on Wednesday evening.

All four goals were scored in the first period as the Storm (12-2-1, 5-1 A-R-C) went ahead 3-0 before the Spartans (9-4-1, 3-2-1 A-R-C) capitalized.

GOAL SUMMARY

  • Brissa Valadez opened up the scoring midway through the first half with a left-footed strike from the top of the box to the far corner.
  • Alexis Ponce gave the Storm a two-goal cushion in the 33rd minute by curving a corner kick into the back of the net just 12 seconds after subbing into the game.
  • Less than two minutes later, Macy Kuhns scored her first collegiate goal to increase Simpson's lead to 3-0. Attempting to cross the ball to Valadez, Kuhns' pass was deflected back to her by a Spartan defender, which she finished into the right corner.
  • Dubuque managed to avoid the shutout with a goal by Emma Kober with just over five minutes left in the first half.
  • Simpson outshot the hosts 11-3 in the final 45 minutes but neither team found the back of the net as the Storm secured the 3-1 victory.

NOTES

  • Dubuque still leads the all-time series 14-12-2, but Simpson continued to close the gap with its third straight victory.
  • Simpson is 11-0-0 when scoring first as well as 11-0-0 when converting multiple goals.
  • With Macy Kuhns finding the back of the net, 10 different players have now scored for the Storm this season.
