Second half rally falls short for women’s soccer

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Simpson women's soccer team scored two goals in the final 30 minutes but it wasn't enough to overcome an early three-goal deficit in a 4-2 loss to Dubuque on Saturday.

The Storm are now 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the American Rivers Conference. The Spartans are 8-2 and 1-1 in the league.

How it Happened

Dubuque jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, getting goals from Amanda Chlebek, Alexa Martin and Lexus Rose. Chlebek scored after a corner kick in the 16th minute, Martin scored a deep goal in the 18th minute and Rose capped the first-half scoring in the 34th minute.

Jessica Payne put Simpson on the board with a rocket shot from the top of the box, pulling the Storm within 3-1 in the 62nd minute. Olivia Sullivan scored a back-breaking goal, however, finding the back of the net off a free kick in the 73rd minute.

Simpson kept pushing forward and was rewarded with a foul in the box. Aimee Shrock connected on a penalty kick in the 78th minute to close the scoring.

Notes

• After getting outshot 13-1 in the first half, Simpson played even with Dubuque in the second, as the Spartans held a slim 6-5 edge in the final 45 minutes.
• Madeline Schulenberg got the start between the posts but left the game in the 28th minute with an injury. Aspen Brockhouse finished the game in goal.
• Both Payne and Shrock scored their second goals of the season, putting them in a four-way tie for the team lead with Mackenzie Finnegan and Baileigh Nagy.
