Storm comeback falls short in 3-1 loss to Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa — The Simpson women's soccer team generated a second-half goal to pull within one but couldn't complete the comeback in a 3-1 loss to Coe on Tuesday.

Lauren Stillman scored off a deflection in the 63rd minute for the Storm (1-10-3, 0-5 Iowa Conference), who put 11 shots on goal in the loss. Simpson snapped a three-game scoreless streak in the loss, attempting its most shots - 15 - since a 2-2 tie with Clarke on Sept. 27.

"We moved the ball and connected well at times tonight, which led to great scoring opportunities," head coach Jill Serafino said. "We're creating more chances but just haven't found the back of the net enough."

Jordan Holmes, Gabby Lancial, and Kelsey Fauser scored goals for the Kohawks (9-5-1, 2-2). Holmes' strike from 15 yards out was the lone score of the first half. Lancial made it 2-0 early in the second half before Stillman cut the lead in half. Fauser -- Coe's leading goal-scorer -- added an insurance tally when she rebounded her own shot that went off the post in the 74th minute.

"Coe is a solid opponent and stays very organized on the field, which makes it tough to break through them," Serafino said. "They capitalized on their opportunities and we did not, unfortunately."

Primarily a defender, Stillman moved into the midfield for Tuesday's game. The senior and four-year starter capitalized on the opportunity by scoring the first goal of her career, made possible from an assist by her classmate Mackenzie Stump.

"Mac and Lauren have chemistry on the field and it shows when we play them on the same side or up top together," Serafino said. "Tonight that chemistry resulted in a goal. Lauren's persistence in the box paid off."
