INDIANOLA, Iowa – After allowing a goal in the second minute, Simpson matched Dubuque the rest of the way but couldn't generate enough offense in the end as it fell 2-1 to the No. 24 Spartans on Saturday.
Dubuque's goal in the second minute came when Kyleigh Mclaughlin was set up by Jessica Fierce for a fast break score.
The Spartans (8-2-1, 1-1) then went up 2-0 in 30th minute when Emily Meeker hooked a shot inside the upper-right corner of the goal.
That was all the Dubuque would need though.
The Storm (2-8, 0-2) responded in the 41st minute as Casey Reisen scored her team-leading third goal, benefiting from a Meredith Harrison header that fell out of the hands of Dubuque goalie Paige Dykstra.
Both defenses hunkered down in the second half as the score remained 2-1 to the final whistle.
Goalkeeper Zoe Seiler fell to 1-6 for Simpson despite keeping the Storm in the game with nine saves from an aggressive Dubuque attack that outshot Simpson 21-9.
Katelyn Behounek and Harrison both put two shots on goal against a stingy Dubuque defense that has only allowed 0.55 goals per game.
