Storm shut out Clarke, Serafino earns first career win

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Jill Serafino has career win No. 1 under her belt, and if Wednesday's effort is any indication, more will follow.

Meredith Harrison scored one goal and assisted on another as the Simpson women's soccer team shut out Clarke 3-0 for its first win of the season.

Kate Morford scored the first goal of the game in the 21st minute, which ended up being enough for Zoe Seiler and the Simpson defense. Seiler made one save as the Storm (1-2) held Clarke without a shot attempt in the first half.

"It was really exciting to see the girls knock the ball around and play some pretty soccer," Serafino said. "The girls were all excited after the win. They looked at the scoreboard for a good minute after the game, just smiling."

The three-goal win is Simpson's largest margin of victory against a full team since Oct. 25, 2011. Simpson beat AIB 13-0 in 2012, but AIB played with less than 11 players due to a small roster size.

Mackenzie Stump generated Simpson's first score when her driving shot attempt ricocheted off goalkeeper McKenna Crossen. Stump and Crossen collided, allowing Morford to collect the rebound and capitalize on the empty net for her second goal of the season.

The margin remained 1-0 until Harrison found Casey Reisen from 10 yards out in the 71st minute. Harrison added a goal of her own, knocking in a rocket shot from 25 yards away in the 89th minute.

Crossen made five saves and Jenny Wicks put one shot on goal for the Crusaders (0-6), who attempted four shots in the second half.
