Bird shines as Storm beat Culver-Stockton

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Katherine Bird scored two goals and assisted on another as the Simpson women's soccer team beat Culver-Stockton 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Buxton Stadium.

The Storm (5-1-1) recovered nicely from their first loss of the season, a 2-0 setback against Grand View on Wednesday.

Bird provided the assist on the first goal of the game, finding Nicole Pirie from eight yards out in the 14th minute. She connected on her first goal in the 42nd minute, taking advantage of an empty net off the goalkeeper deflection. Her second goal came in the 70th minute, taking Amber Johnson's cross from the right wing.

Simpson outshot Culver-Stockton 13-9 on the afternoon, putting eight shots on goal to five for Culver-Stockton.

Megan Petersen and Jess Toyne split time between the posts, with Petersen making one save and Toyne getting four stops.

Jacqui Porter was saddled with the loss in goal for the Wildcats (1-3-1), making five saves.

Simpson returns to action Thursday, Sept. 22 when it travels to Wayne, Neb. for a 5 p.m. kickoff against Wayne State.
