Mathis, McChesney find podium at Luther Open

DECORAH, Iowa -- Sam Mathis and Dylan McChesney fought their way through a competitive field of 17 teams to lead the Storm at the Luther College Open on Saturday.

Mathis led Simpson with two wins on the day, starting his day with a 4-0 decision over Alex Heisdorffer of Cornell. Mathis wasn't able to take down eventual winner Bowen Wileman, but was able to bounce-back with a 6-4 overtime win over Omar Begic of Wartburg before losing by fall in the third place match.

In the silver division, McChesney started the tournament on the right foot, pinning Upper Iowa's Jacob Ragsdale with 15 seconds left in the third period. He couldn't advance past the semifinals, though, losing by decision to Wartburg's Kobey Pritchard 18-11. McChesney lost a narrow, 6-4 decision to Coe's Diego Ortega in the third-place match.

Jakob Slavin added another win for the Storm, pinning Rochester's Kyle Mitchell. Slavin was knocked out of the tournament in the next round, going down to Zayren Terukina of Wartburg.
