Padilla wins title at MacMurray

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- Jason Padilla ran the table to win the 133-pound title, leading the Simpson wrestling team at MacMurray's Bob Kellogg open on Saturday.

Jakob Slavin added a second-place finish and Jacob Irwin came in fifth as the Storm brought a small group of wrestlers to the first tournament of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Padilla went 4-0 on the day, winning the title by advancing in close matches. After a 14-4 major decision over Hannibal-LaGrange's Calem McElwee-Wise, the rest of Padilla's matches were decided by three points or less. He scored a 3-1 decision over MacMurray's Reese Britton in the second round, edged Lincoln's RJ Marrero 5-3 in the semifinal and shut out Millikin's Carlos Garza 3-0 in the championship.

Slavin posted a 2-1 record at 149 pounds to finish as the runner-up. He earned a 21-6 tech fall over Lincoln's Daevon Sloan in the first round and outscored Millikin's Wilyonde Bell 23-15 in the semifinal. His winning streak ended with a fall by Millikin's Garrick Walker in the title match.
