Close matches hurt Storm in loss to Dubuque

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Jacob Irwin and John Gioffredi closed the night with back-to-back pins but the Simpson wrestling team fell to Dubuque 30-15 in the final dual of the season Tuesday night at Hopper Gymnasium.

The visiting Spartans (9-6, 4-4 Iowa Conference) opened the night with five straight wins in a dual that began at 141 pounds. Dubuque benefitted from three, one-point wins and got pins from Andrew Turner (174) and Ethan Cain (197).

In addition to the pins from Irwin (125) and Gioffredi (133), Noah Robinson (184) tallied a one-point win for the Storm (3-11, 2-6).

Irwin built a big lead on Riley Sweetland before earning the pin with 11 seconds left, his second win by fall of the season. Gioffredi continued his late-season surge, using just 1:43 to pin Amad Willis. He increased his winning streak to nine with the win and closes the conference schedule with a perfect 7-0 mark.

JeVontae Yarbrough started the night with a 4-3 win over Alek Ziegler. Then Zarik Anderson edged Blake Bauer 8-2 before Kane Wilmington snuck by Jaret Probasco 1-0. Kalkbrenner pinned Dalton Kenig and Turner took down Kobey Bosworth to open up a 21-0 lead for Dubuque.

Robinson got Simpson on the board, using a third-period escape to beat Chris Nielsen 2-1. 

Ethan Cain snapped DeVaughn Scott's six-match winning streak, pinning the junior in 3:45. Robert Melise's escape in the second period was the only point scored in the 285-pound match.
