Wrestlers compete at Duhawk Open

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Just one day after a tough conference dual at Dubuque, a handful of Simpson wrestlers competed in the Duhawk Open. Five of Simpson's eight wrestlers placed in the top six at the meet, where no team scores were kept.

Devin Syler turned in the Storm's highest place on the day, taking fourth at 157 pounds. He earned a 4-2 win over Anthony Hebert (Upper Iowa) in the first round before losing in the semifinals. He advanced on injury default over teammate Clay Harris on the backside but fell to Kory Jauch (unat. Wis.-Whitewater) in the consolation final.

Harris went 3-2 at 157, earning a 15-3 major over Adrian Salazar (Buena Vista) in the first round and getting a pair of decisions in the consolation bracket before defaulting to sixth.

Simpson also had two placewinners at 197 pounds in Ethan Calvert and Ryan Policheri. Calvert placed fifth with a 1-1 mark.

Colby Vlieger added a fifth-place effort at 285, going 2-2 on the day with a 5-2 win over Jake Anderson (Wis.-Whitewater) in the opening round.

Simpson hosts Buena Vista on Saturday, Feb. 7. The dual was originally scheduled for Jan. 6, but was postponed due to travel concerns. Start time is set for 7 p.m. at Cowles Fieldhouse.
