Storm on wrong end of close matches in loss at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Simpson wrestling team was on the wrong end of a handful of close matches on Friday night.

Devan Berrian picked up a win at 141 pounds, but the Storm (6-10, 0-5 Iowa Conference) lost five matches by a combined nine points in a 36-3 loss to Dubuque.

Berrian earned an 8-2 decision over Ethan Kleitsch, improving to 12-3 on the season.

Aside from surrendering six points via a forfeit at 125 and pins at 133 and 149, Simpson hung with the 30th-ranked Spartans (8-10, 3-2). Five matches were decided by three points or less and another was by just four.

The string of narrow defeats began at 157 pounds when Jacob Mize lost to Frank Frasetto 5-4. Brian Haynes dropped a 5-2 decision to Manuel Mendoza at 165 and Brett Roberts suffered a 4-3 setback to Elton Turnage at 174. Spencer Ward lost to Matthew Leveille 7-3 at 184 and Simpson lost the last two matches in overtime. Ethan Calvert lost 5-3 to Dominic Sterr at 197 and Colby Vlieger fell to Dan Howell 3-1 at 285.
