Roberts leads Simpson at Luther Open

DECORAH, Iowa - Brett Roberts wrestled to a fifth-place finish in the 174-pound bracket of the Freshmen Division at the Luther Open on Saturday.

No team scores were kept as Simpson sent 10 wrestlers to the mat in the second tournament of the season under first-year head coach Nate Hansen.

Hansen is encouraged by the potential his team has based on what he's seen in the early stages of the season.

"We're not where we want to be," Hansen said. "But I believe we were in several matches that we could win with a few more weeks of consistent development."

Roberts went 4-2 on his way to a fifth-place finish. Cory Stratton added 2-2 mark at 157 pounds in the Elite Division.

Roberts started his day by pinning Hansen (North Iowa Area CC) before losing a 7-1 decision to Nick Fuller (Wartburg). On the back side of the bracket he advanced to the consolation semifinals with an injury default and a pin against David Kramer (Luther). He dropped a 7-0 decision to Dalton Westerlund (Upper Iowa) in the consolation semis but won the fifth-place match over Fuller thanks to another injury default.

Stratton registered pins over Nick Jazdzewski (Luther) and Taylor Reicks (Upper Iowa) on the day and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the consolation bracket before his day ended on a narrow, 7-5 loss to Scott Hogan (UW-La Crosse).

The Storm head to Cedar Rapids on Saturday, Nov. 17 for the Coe Open beginning at 9 a.m.
