Booton leads Storm to second at own invitational
INDIANOLA, Iowa — Haley Booton fired a career-low 78 at the single-round Simpson Invitational on Wednesday at Indianola Country Club, leading the Storm to a second-place finish of 11 teams in the final tune-up before the Iowa Conference Championship.
Simpson shot 331 as a team, just two strokes behind tournament champion Central. Five Iowa Conference schools competed in order to get a feel for the layout at Indianola Country Club, which will serve as the site for the final two rounds of the league championship Oct. 6-7. Dubuque finished in fourth place, Loras took sixth and Coe ended up 11th.
The Storm shot their lowest round as a team since shooting 328 and 329 on opening weekend (Sept. 2-3).
Booton made 11 pars on her home course to finish alone in fourth place of 58 competitors. Courtney Mabeus and Hannah Gordon each shot 82 to tie for seventh, giving Simpson three, top-10 finishers.
Mabeus, a senior, posted the lowest round of her career while Gordon, a transfer, closed her first "regular" season with the Storm's lowest stroke average (83.9).
