Women's golf takes fourth at own invitational

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Courtney Mabeus fired a 101 to place 17th and lead the Simpson women's golf team to a fourth-place finish of five teams at the Simpson Fall Invitational on Monday.

Conditions were challenging at the over 6,000-yard layout at Indianola Country Club, as abnormally cool temperatures and some precipitation made play difficult throughout the day.

Mabeus shot a 52 on a tough front nine before closing with a 49 on the back. She made par twice in the final nine holes and finished strong, going bogey-par-bogey on 16, 17 and 18, respectively.

The front nine proved to be a big obstacle for the entire field, as only 10 of the 37 golfers kept their scores in the 40s. The front played at 3,166 yards while the back was 2,838.

Holly Baiotto shot 105 on the day to place 21st while Allison McArtor and Lesley Pearey each shot 106 to tie for 22nd.

Serena Robinette placed 30th (124) and Samantha Sweet 31st (128) to close out Simpson's finishers. Coltyn Hunter and Kelsey Van Veen did not finish their rounds.

Molly Geick of Des Moines Area CC won the individual title by a stroke over her teammate, Maggie Peters, carding a 16-over 87 on the day. The duo was tied after shooting identical 46s on the front nine, but a double bogey by Peters on the par-5 13th gave Geick the edge.

DMACC turned in three of the top five scores and won the team title by 19 strokes over Central, shooting 365 for the day. Central's Christine Ausman made a 90 to place third, helping the Dutch take second with 384. Coe (390), Simpson (418) and Iowa Wesleyan (474) rounded out the team scores.
