Simpson finishes fourth at IIAC Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Simpson women's golf team couldn't quite keep pace with the leaders as it finished fourth at the Iowa Conference Championship, which concluded Saturday.

After a 30-shot advantage for Wartburg (+130) through round one, it was a race for second from the outset as Simpson (+257) fell short in the three-way battle to Central (+245) for runner-up while Luther (+246) claimed third.

Simpson's consistent duo of Jennifer Gaffney (80-80-92-87-339) and Stacy Bergeson (83-89-83-87-342) took the last swings of their career as both earned All-Conference honors placing sixth and ninth, respectively. It was Gaffney's third All-Conference selection (sixth in 2011 and first in 2012) and Bergeson's second (fifth in 2011).

Fellow senior Jessica Lerdal (85-83-87-90-345) knocked on the door of her first All-Conference placement, but an 11th-place finish left her just three strokes behind Bergeson. Molly Hill finished in 26th place (96-94-89-96-375) while sophomore Holly Baiotto took 30th (105-96-94-97-392).

With the win, Wartburg matches Simpson's record of nine total IIAC Conference Championships.
