Women's golf in second after opening round at BV

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Simpson sits in second place after the first day of the Buena Vista Invitational, thanks in large part to Jennifer Gaffney's 8-over 80 on the first 18 holes at Lake Creek Country Club.

Gaffney finished the day in second place, four strokes off the pace set by Central's Taylor Hill.

Stacy Bergeson closed the day tied for third after carding an 85 while freshman Kiley Wermersen is in fifth (87) and Jessica Lerdal is tied for sixth (89).

Central shot a 342 on the day, just five strokes ahead of Simpson, which tallied a 347. Coe is third (393) and Buena Vista is fourth (405).

The first tournament of the season comes to a close Saturday.
