Storm cruise past Luther behind double-doubles from Taylor, Chubb

DECORAH, Iowa -- Jenna Taylor and Cassie Chubb posted double-doubles and the Simpson women's basketball team used a big second quarter to beat Luther 81-64 on Monday evening.

Taylor finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season while Chubb added 14 and 10 off the bench for the Storm (4-1, 1-1 American Rivers), who snapped a six-game losing streak in Decorah.

Chubb posted career-bests in points and rebounds to lead a Simpson bench that outscored Luther 32-17.

Monday's game was a makeup from Saturday when Simpson's bus couldn't make the trip to Decorah due to dangerous winter road conditions.

For Simpson, it was worth the wait.

The Storm led from wire-to-wire but pulled away in a decisive second quarter, opening the period on 13-0 run for a commanding 38-20 lead. A jumper by Taylor got the run started and Madie Bacon knocked down four straight at the free throw line. A Chubb layup came between a pair of buckets from Janey Botkins as Simpson outscored Luther 22-11 in the quarter.

Sarah Holtz's three-point play with 3:28 left in the third brought Luther within 55-49, but Chubb answered with a 3-pointer and a Taylor free throw stretched the lead back to 10. Alaira Tyus nailed a 3 at the end of the third quarter to cap off a 13-4 Simpson run that put the game out of reach.

Holtz scored 18 points for the Norse (1-4, 0-1), who shot under 31 percent from the field.

Claire Johnson scored 11 points and Bacon added 10 off the bench for the Storm.
